Imagine welcoming your new baby, but not being able to afford a critical part of her care: diapers. That’s the reality for many of the families who deliver their babies at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Mount Sinai Hospital is located in North Lawndale, a neighborhood that is rich with history and community but lacks a grocery store or supermarket–it is a “food desert.” As a result, North Lawndale families pay a premium to buy diapers and other essential supplies at stores. Additionally, North Lawndale has a 22% poverty rate, and most of the families that Mount Sinai serves rely on public aid, which does not pay for diapers. This means that families pay $70 or more for diapers every month.
We created the Sinai Mom-to-Mom Diaper Bank to provide a year’s worth of diapers to every family that delivers their baby at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Sinai can directly purchase diapers at a significant discount, so for only $40, we can provide diapers for a baby for an entire year and ultimately diaper every baby born at Sinai for $80,000. With a gift of $200, we can diaper five babies for a whole year. With a gift of $1,000, we can diaper 25 babies, and so on.
If you’re able to contribute, please click here to give now and help reduce the financial stress on new parents at Mount Sinai Hospital. The average baby goes through about 3,000 diapers in their first year. If we diaper all 1,500 babies born at Sinai for one year, that’s about 4.5 million diapers!
Thank you so much for helping with this new project. We look forward to updating you on our progress.
